ANZIBA 2007

We are pleased to announce that the 2007 Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy (ANZIBA) conference will take place on 9th-10th November 2007, in Newcastle, Australia (hosted by the Institute of Organisational and Institutional Performance, Faculty of Business and Law, University of Newcastle, Australia). The keynote speaker for ANZIBA 2007 will be Udo Zander (Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden).

The conference theme for ANZIBA 2007 is:

Institutions and Organisations in an International Context.

Institutions consist of formal rules (e.g., legal structures) and informal conventions (e.g., social environments, cultural influences and cognitive processes) that shape human behaviour and, therefore, structure how exchanges are conducted. Organisations are the actors – including firms, not-for-profit entities, co-operative ventures and professional groups – that carry out transactions within institutional settings. Institutions and culture influence the behaviour of organisations, but organisations can also change institutional contexts.

As organisations, MNEs must adapt when they enter environments characterised by distinctive institutional and cultural arrangements, while countries that seek support from international organisations (e.g., IMF, World Bank, GATT) often need to adjust their institutional underpinnings. Organisations may operate within multiple institutional frameworks, such as MNEs that function in many countries. At a more micro level, immigrants and expatriates operate within a 'host' institutional setting, while maintaining their traditional cultures. Institutions may facilitate specific forms of exchange, but they can also constrain particular types of transactions, or cause them to assume unusual forms.
